Indeed. The spanking scene is one of the things that makes Kiss Me, Kate so troubling/interesting. Fred retaliates to Lilli's shrewishness (she repeatedly slaps Fred, kicks him in the goods, and calls him a bastard onstage) by spanking her onstage during their production of The Taming of the Shrew. They have this bizzare sort of mutually abusive relationship.
Is it okay to depict spousal (or in this case, ex-spousal) physical abuse (or verbal/emotional abuse) for comic effect? What about artistic effect? Maybe it isn't. OC Weekly's review of our production called us out on it.
Anyway, it is quite the butt slap. And: Hey Reuben!
